Pro bono work

Through our pro bono program, employees identify and bring forward projects for nonprofits they are passionate about. We are helping organizations maximize their impact, increase efficiencies, and uncover new or better ways for them to make a difference. It’s a win-win!

Partner organizations

Bates White has partnered with nonprofit organizations to address various data challenges—from analyzing school-based funding to uncovering spending patterns to developing interactive analysis tools. Learn more about our community partners and a few recent projects.

  • Children's Law Center

For several years, Bates White has been analyzing the DC Council’s agency-level budgets for Children’s Law Center (CLC). These budgets can be difficult to interpret and are typically released only a week before the Council begins budget hearings. Bates White’s analysis of the budget identifies key trends in the budget and facilitates the formation of CLC’s strategy in advocating for some of the city’s most vulnerable populations during the budget hearings. Learn more about our relationship with CLC.

  • Higher Achievement

For many years, employees have served as mentors in Higher Achievement centers, conducted pro bono analyses, raised money through creative competitions, and served on Higher Achievement’s leadership council. The firm also conducted pro bono projects that included an analysis of the school-based funding landscape and a dashboard to help students evaluate high school options.

  • Bread for the City

On behalf of Bread for the City (BFTC), Bates White analyzed how anonymous recipients used debit gift cards from BFTC's Holiday Helpings program. BFTC wanted to understand if this type of direct financial aid was more effective than other forms of assistance. Bates White shared findings with the BFTC Board on the types of stores their clients frequented, where in and around Washington, DC, the clients were using the funds, and how purchase patterns differed when clients received physical versus electronic cards. BFTC used this information to inform their strategic decision-making process for subsequent programs.

Bates White worked with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington, DC (RMHCDC) to enhance donor outreach efficiency and demonstrate the positive impact on the community. The team investigated patterns in individual and corporate donor behavior and evaluated the success of prior outreach activities. Bates White also analyzed trends that illustrated how the organization uses their resources to benefit families and children. RMHCDC is using the statistical analysis to support future grant applications and donations.
