For the 15th consecutive year, Global Competition Review (GCR) has included Bates White on its prestigious GCR 100: Economics list, calling it a “go-to firm for economic analysis and testimony in complex antitrust matters.” Being named on the list indicates that a firm is among the world’s leading antitrust economics consultancies and has advised clients on some of the most complicated competition matters in the world.
In its 2024 profile of Bates White, GCR featured Michael Whinston’s work for the DOJ in United States v. Google, a civil antitrust suit in which the DOJ alleged that Google monopolized internet search and search advertising by denying competitors access to distribution channels. GCR also recognized Anna Meyendorff’s class certification report submitted on behalf of federal plaintiffs in the California Gasoline Spot Market Antitrust Litigation and Bates White for acting on behalf of plaintiffs in the Rail Freight Surcharge Antitrust Litigation.
On the merger front, GCR highlighted Bates White’s involvement in several high-profile matters in 2023, including:
- The U.S. Sugar–Imperial Sugar merger, in which Nicholas Hill worked on behalf of the merging parties to defeat the Department of Justice's (DOJ) attempt to block the transaction, including its appeal.
- The DOJ’s successful block of the proposed $2.18 billion Penguin Random Houseؘ–Simon & Schuster merger, where Dr. Hill testified that based on his analysis, the merger would likely harm authors of anticipated top-selling books, resulting in lower author compensation and worse terms.
- Change Healthcare’s proposed $13.8 billion merger with UnitedHealth Group
This ranking is GCR’s comprehensive listing and analysis of the world’s leading economics consultancies for competition advice. The listing is based on measures including the number of dedicated antitrust economists in the firm, work over the past year, and the number of nominations to Who’s Who Legal: Competition. In 2023, 11 Bates White competition economists were named to that list.
