Through its pro bono program, Bates White partnered with the ACLU in a matter regarding possible discrimination in District of Columbia police force promotions.
The ACLU represented several DC police officers who alleged they had been discriminated against in obtaining promotions based on their race. Working with the ACLU, Arnold and Porter retained Pauline Kennedy to provide statistical analysis of promotion data and officer rankings. Dr. Kennedy’s analyses “were critical to understanding the employment practices at issue” according to Scott Michelman of the ACLU.
