Federico Gutierrez is a Manager in the Mass Torts Practice. He specializes in applying economic theory and econometrics to examine complex business matters. Dr. Gutierrez has conducted data analysis in support of expert testimony involving asbestos liability forecasting, trust distribution procedures, and sexual abuse cases. He has helped develop settlement models using cooperative and non-cooperative game theory. He has significant experience with complex sampling designs and estimation procedures. He is a member of the Bates White International Network and an active participant in the Econometrics Education group.

Prior to joining Bates White, Dr. Gutierrez was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Vanderbilt University.

  • Supported advisory opinions and analyses of the expert in resolution of over 80,000 Zantac and generic ranitidine claims brought against GSK.
  • Supported the expert in asbestos liability valuation in In re Bestwall LLC, pending in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of North Carolina, Charlotte Division. Developed a settlement model using cooperative and non-cooperative game theory and estimated economic and non-economic damages.
  • Supported the expert in In re Aearo Technologies LLC, et al. by conducting statistical analysis to assess alleged damages associated with the use of Combat Arms Earplugs.
  • Performed pro bono econometric analysis for the Washington Lawyers’ Committee to improve the allocation of resources across and within DCPS schools.
  • Estimated wages lost due to restricted labor mobility associated with a “no-poach” agreement in the technology industry.
  • Supported the expert in talc liability valuation on behalf of Johnson & Johnson in In re Imerys Talc America, Inc., et al., a matter pending in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
